6-Month CDs: What to Know Before You Choose

A six-month CD offers a fixed rate for half a year — a short commitment that can suit savers who want predictability without tying funds up for long.

How a 6-month CD works

You deposit a lump sum, the bank sets a rate for six months, and interest accrues until maturity. Because the term is short, any early withdrawal penalty is often smaller in dollar terms than on long CDs — but it can still exceed the interest earned if you withdraw very early.

Short terms and renewal risk

The trade-off with short CDs is reinvestment risk: when the CD matures, rates may be higher or lower than today. Savers who renew repeatedly are effectively re-pricing every six months, which can work for or against them depending on the rate environment.

Check what happens at maturity. Many banks automatically renew into a new 6-month CD at the prevailing rate unless you act within the grace period.

Six months vs. a high-yield savings account

A savings account keeps funds fully accessible but its rate can change at any time. A 6-month CD fixes the rate for the term in exchange for limited access. Comparing the two depends on how confident you are that you won't need the money before maturity.

May suit savers who…

  • Have a known expense coming up in six to nine months
  • Want to test CDs before committing to longer terms
  • Are building the first rung of a CD ladder

Things to check

  • Early withdrawal penalty (often a number of days' interest)
  • Automatic renewal terms and grace period length
  • Minimum deposit and whether jumbo tiers apply
