9-Month CDs: What to Know Before You Choose

Nine-month CDs are less common than 6- or 12-month terms. Banks sometimes use 'odd' terms like this for promotions, so they can be worth a closer look.

Why odd-term CDs exist

Banks set terms to match their own funding needs. A bank may promote a 9-month CD — or 7, 11 or 13 months — to attract deposits that mature at a specific time. These are often called specials or promotional CDs.

Promotional CDs can come with conditions: a minimum deposit, a requirement to hold another account, or renewal into a standard (often lower-rate) term at maturity.

Matching a CD to a date

A 9-month term can line up neatly with a planned expense — a tuition installment, a tax payment, or a home project next spring. Matching maturity to when you need the money reduces the chance of paying an early withdrawal penalty.

Read the renewal terms closely

Because 9-month terms are unusual, a bank may renew a matured 9-month CD into a different standard term. Confirm what the CD renews into and the grace period you'll have to decide.

May suit savers who…

  • Need funds at a specific date under one year
  • Want to capture a promotional term
  • Prefer something between short and one-year commitments

Things to check

  • Whether the rate is promotional and what it renews into
  • Relationship or minimum-balance requirements
  • Early withdrawal penalty structure
